How To Make Money Online By NOT Focusing On Making Money Online

The sad thing is people are always looking for ways to make money through their website. This is the bottom line of every business, however it can backfire if not incorporated the right way. For example, one thing I hate is when I arrive on a website, and right away get bombarded with products, and affiliate links. I’m more content and value based “MOST” likely purchasing a product when I find value in it. I actually made it my mission to come up with cool ways to “make money” by NOT focusing on “making money”. The reason is very simple:

When you use this type of approach, you don’t forget what your main objective is, and continue to build your brand by focusing on your audience. If your passion is money driven, then you have just increased the likelihood of failure. Why? The second you start seeing low returns, you’ll pull the plug on a company which would have had potential…right? Anyway,

Here’s something cool I learned over the years. First, your number one focus should always be value because that’s EXACTLY what people are looking for. Secondly, it’s much easier to provide value if you can find a common problem within your niche. Third, never focus on money, but on your audience, and providing them with what they are looking for. Finally, email newsletters are the best way to accomplish all of this with very little effort, and money. Once you have people opt-into your newsletter, they can be remarketed numerous times over, and over again.

Today, I’ll like to focus on email marketing, and how you can connect with your readers focusing on value. In this same process, you’ll end up making money. Let’s get started. Let’s look at some strategies you can incorporate right now into your email marketing.

Grow The Industry

We waste precious newsletters on sending content NO one wants to read. For example, I get emails everyday with nothing but junk content, and this forces me to unsubscribe. Next, when I do receive emails which are valuable, it’s amazing to see they are based around things I already know. I just like them because they re-iterate things I want to still remember, etc. However, the most exciting newsletters are the ones which show me how my niche is growing, and what I can do to stay ahead of my competition.

We are in an era where so much information is available, and we expect the best. We don’t want to waste time where NO value is added to our bottom line. This is why it is important when we engage through newsletter that we provide nothing but the best to our audience. By doing this, we are accomplishing the following:

First, building trust, and loyalty with our readers which is very important to keep them active. Secondly, you are helping them grow in an industry they love, and this helps them stay in this industry. Next, through loyalty, you can present marketing opportunities which otherwise would NOT be available. Here’s the cool thing,

Sometimes all you have to do is drive people to your website, because you’ll be able to make huge profits through marketing.

Email Authority

I actually learn this strategy through Scott Monty who sends out a newsletter to people on his email list, social media, etc. Instead of him having a list of new content he published, he uses a different approach which has worked enormously well. For example,

Each week, he’ll make a collection of the top posts within his niche. He’ll add the name, link, and a brief introduction of the posts within the newsletter. By doing this, he is eliminating the time it will take for people to find the best posts within their niche. He’s essentially a portal, and this has built his brand, and made people loyal to his newsletter. He’s not the only one, because I know some other people who are doing very well using this same approach. With a loyal following the skies the limit. For example, to be added to his newsletter he can charge a fee, and that money is nothing but solid profit.

I actually like this approach because it eliminates spending huge amounts of time writing content, and focusing on collecting the best posts per week. You just have to skim through the web which is something people are doing on a regular basis anyway…right?

Understand It’s Your Lifeline

Here’s the mistake that many people are making…

They don’t understand a solid email list full of related subscribers is your lifeline. Bloggers start to focus on building a list for the sake of gaining enormous profits, but fail to understand it’s your survival at the same time. For example, with 10,000+ people on your newsletter, you can keep driving people to your blog over again which helps build your brand. This ultimately will lead to sales when people know everything you provide will help them grow. However,

We often make the first gaol of our newsletter profit, and this is definitely killing your brand, conversions, and audience. By focusing on profit, we tend to NOT focus on value, and what our audience is looking for when they arrive on our website. With that said,

I believe your main focus should be building an email list, and sending value content to them. Overtime, you’ll notice your list, and response time growing which will lead to higher conversions. I’m sure all of you have heard success stories…right? You’ll hear how someone started a business to connect people or provide support, and eventually they started to make thousands of dollars per month.

Sending Product Reviews

I love using this approach because it does generate huge money, but it’s not my focus. I’m in an industry where I have been using a lot of different tools. I’ll admit some are better then others, however it’s important to me (being it my passion) that people know exactly which ones provide a benefit to their bottom line. I don’t want them spending money on a tool which does nothing, but destroy their hard work. This is why I make sure they have value information on every single product available within my niche. However,

I never write or send links to reviews with the purpose of having them buy the product. I provide them a link through my newsletter because I care about my audience, and my reputation. I just want to make sure they have all the information they need to make an informed decision.

In the end, they’ll read reviews on products which will make a difference, and these will generate into sales WITHOUT that being my main focus.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes when we focus on money, we forget about the bottom line – providing value to our readers. Over the years, I have shifted the way I engage my readers because I want to provide value, and make money second. I’ve noticed in the process I have made more money doing things this way. I thought about this to figure out why this was the case, and came to the following conclusion.

When you provide value you are building trust with your audience, and this is the most important thing to them especially when it is a rare commodity. For example, people are always trying to push new products, and make sales without providing value. In the end, “value” is the bottom line.

Next,

I have provided some very important points above that I want all of you to pay close attention to. Let’s quickly go through them in short form:

Growth – As long as you show people on your list how the industry you love is growing, then you’ll grow your business through loyalty. For example, when I started to send out a follow-up to my list, I was able to put together a list of trending topics for my audience. This allowed me to show each of them that I provide value, and my blog is the place to get all your answers. This worked very well as I continued to grow my subscribers list, and convert some of them into customers WITHOUT forcing a sale. Next,

This worked well too because I was able to sell some space in my newsletters, and blog for a pretty high price.

Email Authority –

This is EXACTLY like the example above, but with one major difference. You only have an email list, and NO actual blog. Your job is to network with the top bloggers in the industry collecting top posts, and sending them to your subscribers. The link within the email will redirect out to the individual blogs. How is this so effective?

I’ve seen people with huge lists charge a fee to be included to their weekly follow-up. However, you must also meet other requirements like:

  • Provide value
  • Be an authority
  • Do NOT sell directly
  • Keep fresh, and up-to-date content

Product Reviews

Here’s what’s amazing…

I have been in my niche for over 7 years, and have a bad taste in my mouth with many products. This is why on one blog I’ll provide honest reviews on products which I’ve used, and recommend. I even have space for people to leave their own reviews going forward. Since I know many of the people in my niche are looking for products, I’ll send out a weekly newsletter with new products, and reviews. The cool thing is by providing this information, I was able to generate some sales because people knew I was providing them value. They also found it easier to local the right tools which do what needs to get done.

Next,

In the end, it’s all about testing so be sure to have a method to test different strategies. Once you find one that works, you can stick to it going forward.

A Profoundly Simple Lesson from the 34th US President

Before you head off to Google who the 34th President of the United States is, I’ll just go ahead and tell you here. It’s Dwight D. Eisenhower. His predecessor to the highest office in all the land was Harry Truman and he was followed by John F. Kennedy in 1961. He served as a five-star general and his time as President was largely dominated by the Cold War, as well as the Korean War.

No, you haven’t accidentally stumbled across some blog about US history, but I thought it was worthwhile to provide just a bit of context into what we’ll be talking about today. And what we’re going to talk about is a strategy for handling all the things that you want to do with the limited time and resources that you have available to you.

Dwight D. Eisenhower is often quoted as saying, “I have two kinds of problems, the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent.” This quote has since been further developed and extrapolated to create what is now known as the Eisenhower Box.

Depending on where you go and who you listen to, this strategy can take on a few other related names. It might be called the Eisenhower Matrix, the Eisenhower Method, the Eisenhower Decision Principle, or the Eisenhower Decision Matrix. More descriptive and more on point, it’s sometimes called the Urgent-Important Matrix or the Urgent-Important Principle.

Basically, what you do is create a basic 2 x 2 grid. On one axis, you have “urgent” and “not urgent.” On the other axis, you have “important” and “not important.” It doesn’t really matter what order you use, but the standard layout has “urgent” and “not urgent” representing the left and right columns, respectively, with “important” and “not important” aligning with the top and bottom rows, respectively. You end up with a matrix like this.

I’ve color-coded my version here for ease of reference, but the colors are completely arbitrary and not really necessary. They’re just helpful for the visualization. So as you can see, you end up with four distinct quadrants. Everything that you want to do, every task that is ever thrust before you personally or professionally, can fall into one of these four quadrants.

Let me give you a few examples from the context of professional blogging and making money online.

  • Urgent and Important (Red): These are tasks that you should do right now. Let’s say that you want to ramp up an affiliate marketing campaign for the Christmas shopping season and it’s already November. It’s urgent and important, so do it now.
  • Not Urgent and Important (Yellow): These are tasks that are important for you to do, but there is no immediate pressing need to do them. Basically what you need to do here is create a way to make them urgent. In other words, schedule them. Make time to do them. An example might be that you want to write and publish a new e-book. Set aside enough time each day or week so that this book actually gets written.
  • Urgent and Not Important (Blue): These tasks should be delegated or automated. You really should be paying off your credit card bill every month. If due dates are looming, these tasks are important. So, automate them. Another example is keeping your blog updated on a regular basis. It’s not the end of the world if you miss a day here or there, but you don’t really want to do that, resulting in an “urgent” daily deadline. The simplest solution is to outsource (delegate) at least part of that workload.
  • Not Urgent and Not Important (Green): If something isn’t important and it’s not urgent either, you can probably just forget about it. Trash it. Push it out of your consciousness because it’s a waste of your time and effort. A good example might be wasting your time mindlessly perusing through Reddit or Tumblr for no good reason whatsoever. It’s a time-waster, so drop it.

If you ever feel like you’re being pulled in 30 different directions (either by yourself or by circumstance) and you never have enough time, you’re not alone. It’s not perfect, because nothing ever is, but the Eisenhower Matrix can serve as a meaningful and effective time management strategy. It’ll help you get back on track and moving forward.

What to Expect In Your First 15 Days of Business

Day 1: Make Sure Blog Setup Before Launching

Launching your very first blog can have you on the edge of your seat. This is a very exciting time and it’s natural to want to jump the gun and post your content as soon as it’s ready. However, you need to ensure that you’ve included a few necessities before you officially post your website for the world to see.

Your website should include an About Us page as well as Contact Information section. You’ll also need to pay attention to the design. WordPress can help set you up with a free themed design that will assist you to add a little flair to your site. Once your site is up and running Feedburner is a fantastic tool to help you keep track of your RSS feed and Google Analytics will track the number of readers who visit your site. Take time to make the necessary preparations and your blog will be a success from the get go!

Day 2: Select Topic And Stick With It

Blogs which center on particular themes tend to do better overall. Pick a topic which is near and dear to your heart and about which you have a significant amount of passion. This will help you stay focused and engaged in the discussion.

Successful blogs such as TechCrunch, Perez Hilton and Gizmodo all focus in on one particular topic. This strategy has been phenomenally useful for these sites and it can be for you too!

Day 3: Always Stay Consistent

The frequency of your blog posts depends heavily on how much material you have to share and the time you can dedicate to writing. Daily posts require numerous topic discussions and are extremely time intensive. Your subject area must lend itself to multiple and varied headline titles. Consistency is extremely important when setting up scheduled web posts. Your readership learns to count on a specific timeframe and when you deviate too much from this formula you may find that the attention of your audience will dwindle over time. So set a schedule and stick with it!

Monthly blog posts are good places to start. You can always amplify your efforts at a later date and increase to weekly or daily blogging as the situation dictates. However, there is a danger of losing readership if you decrease your blog posts.

Day 5: Stop Recycling Content

Make your blog effective by being original and authentic. Your content says a lot about you. This being said, it’s important that you strive to stay current and provide new and exciting information within your posts. If it’s a popular discussion, seek to throw in your opinion in a unique and creative manner.

Write when you truly have something to say. Your opinion matters so make your content count and amplify the value by speaking on subjects that hold your passion.

Day 6: Don’t Be Afraid To Take Risks

One of the quickest ways to build a large following is through controversy. Attention is flaunted on posts that challenge the norm and say in print what most people think but are afraid to say. If you feel strongly on a subject than by all means write about it and don’t be scared to be blunt and honest. You always run the risk of infuriating visitors. However, this can work in your favor.

Day 7: Be Different Then Others

What you really need to do is determine your niche. Ponder carefully over creative ways to set yourself apart from the crowd. It doesn’t need to be outlandish but it must be particular to your site and uniquely yours.

For example, my site acts as a how to guide for entrepreneurs. Multiple blogs exist which discuss entrepreneurship but not many offer resources and how-to manuals that are practical and applicable. My site provides action steps and detailed strategies that are indispensable to viewers.

Find your own particular brand of special and you too will can make a lasting impression and carve a reputation for yourself in the online world.

Day 8: Leverage Social Media

There is substantial power in social media. Sites such as Twitter, and Hacker News, receive a great deal of traffic and their popularity can elicit a favorable response from viewers when your content is the subject in question. Commentators and visitors alike come to these locations seeking information and therefore it’s an ideal place to post content and increase your site awareness.

Sites that broadcast material closely related to your work are excellent avenues to begin your jaunt into the social media world.  Here is a comprehensive list you might wish to peruse when deciding on just the right social media outlet for you. Facebook, StumbleUpon and Twitter are most commonly known. Of these, Twitter can be the most fruitful as posts are automatically tweeted out.

Leverage the power of social media to make your presence felt. Your content will thank you!

Day 9: Network With Others

Relationships and connections are truly what drives any business to succeed in this market. This applies to the arena of blogging as well. For bloggers to link back to you they must first feel a connection. How you build this connection is up to you but ultimately it’s always good to begin with methods that are tried and true.

Email and instant messaging are excellent starting points. Build conversations and develop a rapport with as many bloggers as possible. The likelihood that they will plug your blog is greatly increased by the connections you foster.

Day 10: Analyze And Learn From Feedburner

It’s vital you understand your readership along with their likes and dislikes. This will help you immensely when you’re determining what type of headlines you want to write under and eventually publish. Feedburner is an excellent tool that can provide an invaluable service to your business. Not only can it tell you how many RSS subscribers you have, it can also evaluate the number of times RSS subscribers clicked on different blog posts. The value of this tool lies in its ability to provide data. Putting this into action can assist your business in the evaluation of specific headlines or topics and thus propel your content right down the path of success.

Day 11: Participate In Comments

Share and share alike! This should be your motto when you’re attempting to build a following through your blog. The comments section is a perfect place to attract reviews and acquire feedback but it’s also the best way to build connections. Post comments to get comments. The old adage says give and ye shall receive. This rings true here as well. If you share thoughtful and sincere opinions throughout the comments section of your competition, you’ll be pleasantly surprised when they return the favor.

Day 11: Search Engine Optimization

Making your blog search-engine friendly does not have to be complicated. WordPress or Movable Type blogs fit perfectly with Google and other search engines. You may need to dedicate more time to your efforts if your blog is not in this format but it is definitely doable if you follow a few simple steps.

Day 12: Writing Series For Success

Any post that runs in a series will encourage return readership. Writing a three part series may be time consuming however the traffic that it generates will well make up for the energy output.

New blogs are fragile little creatures that require care and nourishment. In order to guarantee readership, you need to give visitors a reason to return. Blogs that run in a series fit this niche perfectly. As a new blogger it is to your advantage to begin in triplicate. Look to examples such as Problogger for guidance. They have managed to create a 31-day series of posts about blogging and have made this strategy enormously successful.

Day 13: Monetization

Monetization strategies work best after a blog has been up and running for over three months. Primarily you must attract readership before employing this type of approach as it can detract from the overall experience of visitors.

However, once you’re established and confident that you have acquired a solid following, there is nothing wrong with developing a plan to monetize your blog. Google AdSense is a good place to start but you must branch out from there. Put your eggs in many baskets, so to speak, and you’ll see your efforts pay off big time!

Now is the time to be creative and pretty much anything goes. You may wish to implement an integrated approach such as a subscription program. Whichever avenue you choose, make sure you test out its effectiveness over a number of months and make adjustments as necessary.

Day 14: Encourage People To Comments

Don’t forget to comment! The importance of this section to your blog can not be understated. This is a means by which you can connect with your readers. Here you can get new ideas for future blogs and appreciate areas for improvement. To truly enhance the size of your comment section, consider posing a question at the end of your article or encourage visitors to leave a comment detailing their opinion.

Day 15: Implement Solid Tweeting Schedule

Tweets from others serve to increase your credibility. You’ve written a fantastic blog and now you wish to increase readership. Social media platforms offer unique opportunities to market your content. However, you need to encourage sharing as much as possible.  Here are a few ways you can leverage your Twitter account with tweets from other people;

  1. You might wish to send out an email encouraging friends and colleagues who are active Twitter users to tweet about your blog. We all have connections so why not use them to our advantage.
  2. Tweet about your blog and then ask your followers to retweet your message.
  3. It’s a fruitful idea to join a social media ring. This can function as a symbiotic relationship where members participate in tweeting about each other’s content.

3 Tips for creating your first ECommerce Store

As time goes on, more and more people are determined to become self-employed bosses of their own. Working nine to five is becoming a thing of the past as fewer people are settling for routine jobs and more are opting for setting their own hours and working from home.

Thanks to the internet, eCommerce stores are gaining more popularity around the globe and online shopping increases every year. Pew Research found that 80 percent of people in the U.S. shop online, and that number is set to increase every year. Clearly, the demand for accessible eCommerce stores isn’t going anywhere.

If you’re trying to create your very first eCommerce store, here are 3 tips to help you along the way.

1. Know what’s required

Creating and running an eCommerce business is the same as any business: it comes with its trials. Go into it with the right expectations and mindset. This is your business, it’s important, and you’re determined to make it a success. It may not be a brick and mortar store but that doesn’t mean it won’t require persistence, patience, and a lot of hard work.

You also have to be willing to put in the time. Being your own boss means creating a schedule and sticking to it. The less you picture your online shop as a legitimate business, the faster it’ll crash and burn. Realize that this is significant work. If it’s going to be successful and bring in positive ROI, it requires a serious commitment from you.

A few things that’ll be required once you open up shop are:

  • Hosting
  • A domain
  • A business name
  • Licenses particular to your country, state, and county
  • An SSL certificate to protect customer information
  • A vendor if you aren’t creating all the products yourself
  • Branding

2. Choose the right platform

The eCommerce platform you choose for your store determines the kind of user experience (UX) your site will have. It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of your potential platforms to see which one most benefits the products in your niche.

When choosing a platform, there are multiple things to consider:

  • Price. Come up with a range for your startup budget depending on the elements your site will need. Take into account the size you estimate your business to grow to, maintenance fees, creating and shipping inventory, and monthly subscription costs to start.
  • Web hosting. If you’re a complete beginner, the best option is to choose a fully-hosted provider that’s got everything built in and ready to use. These options require no coding, HTML, or CSS. If you’re knowledgeable with coding or prefer open source coding capabilities, go with a self-hosted provider.
  • Features. What are its payment gateways? How about its compatibility with the products and services you want to sell? What are its SEO features so that you can be sure you’re ranking in search engines?

It’s important to consider what psychological strategies you can use to show consumers they want to take action right away. You can use a helpful plugin for your store like OptinMonster to create popups and optins that will get a visitors’ attention when your site feels they’re about to exit the page. Give them an offer they can’t refuse and they’ll willingly hand over their email address.

WooCommerce

One of the most popular eCommerce platforms on the market is WooCommerce which runs through WordPress. It’s free, easy to use and learn, and is one of the most highly recommended eCommerce plugins available.

To create an eCommerce site with WooCommerce, you have to create an account.

Then you’re going to download the WooCommerce plugin for WordPress.

From your WordPress dashboard, click Plugins and Add New.

Upload the WooCommerce plugin file you downloaded and click Install Now.

Click Activate Plugin.

You’ll then use Setup Wizard to help you through every step of your setup.

3. Always optimize for mobile

With 4.5 billion active mobile users globally in 2018, it’s essential your online store is optimized for mobile. People are constantly sifting through endless content on their phones, and online shopping is a huge part of that.

According to Statista, 200 million people shopped from their mobile phones in 2018. It’s a method of purchasing that provides ease, simplicity, and convenience. It’s no longer a requirement to go out, stand in long lines, and spend extra time browsing different products. People want the simplest solution to their shopping needs and mobile friendly eCommerce stores provide them with what they want.

Google announced earlier this year that it’s now migrating sites that use the best practices for mobile indexing. This means that now, instead of primarily looking at and focusing on desktop web pages, they’re now prioritizing web pages on mobile. If that’s not reason enough to create a mobile-friendly eCommerce store, nothing is.

Test your store’s mobile friendliness using Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test. Simply enter your website’s URL and the results are a click away.

What’s next?

Creating your first eCommerce store doesn’t have to be difficult. With the right plugins and mental preparation, you’ll be up and running in no time. How will you go about creating your first eCommerce store?

Why You Should Never Doubt the Value of Human Curation

For better or for worse, we live in the age of the algorithm. Remember when you used to log into your Facebook account and you’d be presented strictly with a reverse chronological view of your “news feed.” And when you “liked” or “followed” a business page, you’d be shown every one of their posts in the same way that you’d see all of your friends’ posts in that same reverse chronological view? Those days are gone.

Remember when you’d go over to YouTube and the front page would be populated with content from your subscribed channels? That page still exists, but it’s not at the front anymore. Instead, you’re shown videos and channels that the algorithm *thinks* that you’d like. And that can be a good thing for discovery, but much like the Facebook algorithm, it’s also how you fall deeper and deeper into an echo chamber.

You keep being shown more and more of the same, narrowing your scope further and further, simply reaffirming any preconceived notions or viewpoints that you may have. Some may say that’s why the political situation in the United States (and around the world for that matter) has turned into what it has. If you don’t like or agree with what someone has to say, you can unfollow or block them. That way, you only get messages you’ve already demonstrated you like and agree with.

Where Are Vincent’s Picks?

Despite all the apparent pitfalls and dangers of the algorithm, it certainly has its value. It saves us a lot of time, for example for finding what it is that we want. The Netflix algorithm is tremendous, in this regard. Instead of the old way of flipping through every cable channel you have, the algorithm serves you with content it thinks you’ll like based on what you’ve already watched. It’s really, really good at that.

But it narrows your scope. There’s this great video by The Verge where they visited the last Blockbuster Video in America. It’s located in the small town of Bend, Oregon. Yes, there’s still a Blockbuster Video.

In effect, what they’ve done is humanize the algorithm. The staff there know their regular customers by name. They know their tastes and preferences, so they know what to recommend them. And the customers respect these recommendations, because they know the people who work at this video store really know their movies. They trust these recommendations far more than what an algorithm would be able to provide, just like how Elaine trusted Vincent’s picks over Gene’s.

This isn’t restricted purely to in-person encounters and relationships either. Think about the viral, clickbait titles that you encounter all the time. You’ll see lists like the “top 10 best romantic comedies of the 1990s” or similar. You click, because you’re interested, even though you could have just went into your Netflix queue and looked under romantic comedies. You want a real, human opinion. That’s human curation.

I Just Want to Read

Here’s another great example. When I co-authored Make Money Online: Roadmap of a Dot Com Mogul with John back in 2010, the book was based on an e-book that John already had, which in turn was based on some of the content that he already had up on the blog. The blog is free to read. The e-book was a free download. Why, then, would someone want to buy a copy of the book? Because the value of human curation is there.

We took the most important, most poignant, most useful parts that all related to the single unifying purpose of the book, and bundled them all together in one convenient package. Most people don’t want to scour through the thousands of posts on this blog to find the relevant morsels. The book does that for that. Beyond the Margins, my guide on starting your own freelance business, started out with much the same kind of inspiration. I curated existing blog posts, expanded on them and added more value, and packaged it up into a new book.

Newsflash: People Are Lazy

They really are. They want you to do the work for them and, under the right circumstances, they’re willing to pay you for it. They value your opinion, if your opinion is worth valuing, and that’s why there will always be a place for human curation.

Dare to be your own algorithm. And then share your personal gift and perspective with anyone who cares to listen.
